Impacted Tooth Exposure
During normal tooth development, there are two sets of teeth. Your primary (or baby) teeth erupt into the mouth during early childhood. As these teeth fall out, they are replaced by the more permanent (adult) teeth. Occasionally, a permanent tooth will get “stuck” underneath another primary tooth, another adult tooth, or a thick layer of bone. The tooth fails to erupt into the mouth as it should.
These teeth are classified as “impacted”. Impacted tooth exposure involves surgically accessing the tooth to make way for its eruption and to allow the attachment of an orthodontic appliance to help with correct alignment. This enables your orthodontist to “pull” the tooth into position aligned with the remaining teeth.
