At Poulos, Somers & Marshall, we understand that getting surgery for gum disease can be scary and intimidating, which is why we offer a wide variety of non-surgical perio treatments.

Our goal is to restore your oral health without invasive surgery, and we use a variety of different treatments to eliminate bacteria, clean your gums and teeth, and repair the damage done by gum disease. Read on to learn more about our non-surgical perio treatment options for gum disease.

Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling & root planing is the first step in treating gum disease. In this process, scalers and scrapers are used to remove bacteria-laden plaque and tartar from between your teeth and gums. This non-surgical gum disease treatment is done in two appointments, with one half of your mouth being cleaned at a time, and is often enough to resolve minor-to-moderate gum disease.

LANAP Laser Periodontal Therapy

At Poulos, Somers & Marshall, we offer LANAP laser periodontal therapy as an alternative to traditional scaling & root planing for patients with more severe cases of gum disease. In this procedure, a powerful dental laser is used to clean bacteria away from your gums and teeth, and to remove diseased tissue. This treatment uses an advanced PerioLase MVP-7 laser, which is extremely precise and accurate for perio treatment.

Not only does LANAP laser therapy eliminate bacteria and diseased tissue, but it can help restore the health of your gums, stabilize loose teeth, and assist in regeneration bone and gum tissue alongside periodontal regenerative therapy.

Technically, this procedure is surgical in nature. But due to the minimally-invasive nature of LANAP therapy, there is very little pain or discomfort compared to other surgeries like gum flap surgery, and you can recover from the treatment very quickly. Usually, you’ll receive treatment over a period of a few weeks, with two 2-hour appointments at Poulos, Somers & Marshall.

Antibiotic Treatments

Antibiotic treatments can take many forms as part of perio treatment, and are typically paired with LANAP laser therapy or scaling & root planing. You can take an oral antibiotic or use an antibiotic rinse to help eliminate bacteria in your mouth as part of your non-surgical gum disease treatment. In some cases, antibiotics may be placed directly under your gums for even better results.

Periodontal Regenerative Therapy

Periodontal regenerative therapy uses your own cells as well as collagen membranes and other tissue to help restore the form and function of your gums without surgery.

Depending on the extent of your periodontal disease, this procedure may be non-surgical or it may involve some surgeries to access the gums, roots of your teeth, and the jaw bone
